Barrel Drums: Rhythms & Noise

A few week back Bill hired me to help in a project that he had just been engaged for, which takes place today at lunch time. Along with two other guys, I will be banging a series of rhythms (rock, swing, waltz, samba…) on a big metal oil barrel while three other musicians blow into home made horns. Really home made! With bits of garden hoses, plastic tubings, big coffee cans and a bunch of little details to hard to describe here. Ill try and get a picture or two.

While we play, six actors will be dancing and moving 5 large, and way to heavy, white cubes with a big letters to form different words. This for a reason that I dare not say yet, since it is secret.

Practice consisted of two rehearsals in Bill’s workshop where we all blew our eardrums out by the noise made in such a small place (yes we did have ear protection, but still..) and last Saturday morning, way to early, where the event will take place: on a strip of asphalt between a grass bank and a greenhouse. Of course outside everything needed to be even louder!

I was pleased that Bill considered me for this since it means that he actually saw it as something I could manage, which it seems I can although just barely, I’m mostly trying to keep a steady base rhythm and am letting the other two guys do all the fancy stuff; especially for the samba.

More about this later….
