My, my, already December 23rd, where does time fly?
On Thursday we played a private gig for an xmas party and since it was private I will only comment on a favorite swiss meal whose name will go unpublished until I remember it. Basically you pile up a mixture of raw meat on your plate: pork, chicken, turkey, beef, lamb… anything goes. These are cooked on a heated slab of Teflon placed in the center of the table, you know, one of those thingies for melting cheese.

The last few times Crawfish has gotten together to rehearse have mostly been to determine whether we could manage some decent electrified versions of a few of the songs we do, this for the xmas concert at La Case A Chocs in two weeks. For me it doesn’t change much, I just try and make my noise even louder but for Dave, playing electric guitar instead of acoustic will be a change.

Monday I practiced my washboard with Bill who attempted to drill some rhythmic sense into my rhythmically dense brain.
It’s one of those things, behind me are two years of practicing that instrument that have made me actually think I could learn to play it properly – I never would have though I could do what I now can. On the other, all the future work necessary to actually start making music with it as opposed to just barely keeping a rhythm.

It snowed Tuesday, Wednesday and even a bit of Thursday.
Snow brings its own little story here as the city officials try and juggle between the town’s finances, keeping the streets usable and the growing wave of civil disobedience among car owners.

Last week I decided that I needed a new washboard, after all I only have four. The fact is that I have now been spoiled by my Zinc King National 703, before which my only reference was the old super heavy duty Swiss scrubboard that I first picked up. Made of birch wood the whole thing is as strong as they come, a fact that unfortunately does not translate into exciting sound.

So the Organic Blues Unit spent most of the weekend in J.-Daniel’s (thanks) recording studio for our first demo. I’ve been practicing like mad all month for this and was pretty hyper while I packed the car with my gear and a morning of setting up microphones, getting them to the “best” placements did nothing to help relax. I was stuck into the “aquarium” (picture), one end of the room that had been sealed off with a window and door, so that my washboard and cymbals didn’t bleed into what Dave and Bill where playing.
