Journey to the Moon by William Kentridge

13 February 2010

Enjoy!

…..

I was browsing through one of last month’s New Yorkers, trying to catch up, when I stumbled on the profile of William Kentridge by Calvin Tomkins so I decided to look him up since, unfortunately, my mind rarely remembers names so I wouldn’t have been able to say whether I knew of his work or not. Which was yes & no, I had seen some of his stuff but who knows where and when, or what passed through…. So I watched a few of his animations which I liked but found somewhat frustrating too. Not really sure why…

Than the above (apparently first presented at the 2005 Venice biennale) passed by: Cool, like that one! Why not post it?

So I did because I do. It is playful, poetic, charming, and the way the “real” integrates with the drawn is masterly. (More info about Journey to the Moon)

It also made me wonder about the hows and whys that make it so that anyone (myself) can now stick someone’s (the artist’s) work of art (the above video) anywhere on the web (here).

But did I?

A painting (for instance) on the web can only be a picture of. Are the compressed, and far from what you would see if the original film, tape or file was projected on a screen, videos just “pictures of a movie” or the real thing?

Is that a useless thought/does it matter/who does it matter to?
:P
