HERO RATS

17 January 2010

because landmines stink About a year and a half ago I stumbled on the Hero Rat website and was very impressed, but as one often does I put it aside for later and forgot all about it. Until last January (‘09) that is, when it popped into my mind that even I could afford the 5 Euro (just over $7) monthly fee of adopting a rat. So I did.

Kim is one of the 5 “symbolic” rats that you can adopt, actually from what Ive gathered looking through their info there are at least 300 rats being trained or doing what they’ve been trained for. In Kim’s case this means detecting tuberculosis, which she does well! Last September in Tanzania where they work for instance these rats found 70 patients with active TB that were missed by microscopy!…

7 April 2009

Fish Bone Yang White T-Shirt A truly amazing thing has happened this month: public spaces all became non smoking overnight! I was sure that this area would continue to let folks smoke everywhere until the end of time, just two years ago a local restaurant manager was booed out of her job for just thinking such a thing…

This Land is Your Land - The Obama Inaugural Celebration Concert

21 January 2009

There is a nice little article about this song, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger by Tommy Stevenson that has also been posted at truthout. As emotive as Obama’s oath giving was the next day, it was a far cry from hearing all the words of This Land is Your Land sung from the steps of the Lincoln memorial; the true moment of change?
